Happy Birthday, America!
Once again, the Americans will get the chance to prove that we do displays of national pride better than anybody else. This also happens to be the one day when we have a good reason for doing so. Of course, here in North Carolina we get another day to celebrate before it’s too hot outside to enjoy it. As an American it’s easy to become cynical and jaded about everything that makes America — well, America. Just the same, it’s hard to suppress that chest-swelling feeling of pride when you see Old Glory flying while the band plays that familiar Sousa march or the 1812 Overture (which is funny, since it has nothing to do with us at all — but it’s still over-the-top pomp and circumstance, and we just adore that).
This particular Independence Day we’ll also be celebrating the beginning of We the People taking our country back from the forces of fear and evil and returning it to the shining beacon of liberty and blind justice that it’s supposed to be.
